This Public Safety Unit (PUAWER006B) is designed to deliver information to designated staff who will be assuming a leadership role within the Emergency Control Organisation of an industry or workplace. It holds accreditation as an elective unit for people studying for a Diploma in Public Safety (Community Safety) (PUA 51012) and for an Advanced Diploma in Public Safety (Community Safety)(PUA60712). Under Emergency Response Category it is categorized as an “evacuation” skill.
 

Learning Outcomes (Key Elements):

  • Prepare for workplace emergencies.
  • Apply command, and control and coordinate aspects of workplace emergency procedures.
  • Control the response to emergency reports signals and warnings.
  • Coordinate reports and results of initial emergency response.
  • Conclude incidents.

Upon satisfactory completion of this unit, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify possible emergency situations in the workplace.
  • Gather information on possible developments and characteristics of typical emergency situation within the workplace. Assess, analyse and apply this information according to the workplace emergency plan.
  • Identify emergency actions for typical emergency situations and emergency developments.
  • Initiate initial emergency response in accordance with workplace emergency procedures.
  • Control and co-ordinate initial emergency response for typical workplace emergencies.
  • Ensure suitable arrangements are made for the safety of people.
  • Ensure welfare of evacuated people is arranged according to workplace emergency procedures.
  • Ensure emergency response activities are complete before post initial response activities are commenced.
  • Ensure security of assets (if safe to do so).
  • Initiate post initial response activities in consultation with emergency services.
  • Initiate recovery activities in accordance with the workplace emergency management plan.
  • Correctly initiate or identify emergency reports, signals and warnings.
  • Attend and operate emergency stations according to workplace emergency procedures and relevant standards.
  • Assess emergency situations and take appropriate action according to workplace emergency procedures.
  • Ensure emergency response actions are controlled according to workplace emergency procedures.
  • Ensure reports from areas affected by the incident are received or sought.
  • Account for areas confirmed evacuated.
  • Analyse results and reports of the initial emergency response.
  • Action “all clear” is advised to the appropriate people.
  • Provide information for the debriefing
  • Ensure critical incident stress management is organized as appropriate.
  • Conclude incident reporting in accordance with workplace procedures.
